Alabama State History Alabama was settled by the French in 1702 at Fort Louis, it became a state on December 14th, 1819, suceeded from the Union in 1861.  It re-entered being a state after the Civil War.  Alabama's is "The Cotton State", it's moto is "We dare defend our rights".  Alabama's state bird is the Yellow Hammer and it's state flower is the Camellia.  The oldest Christian church in Alabama dates to 1699 in the Iberville Colony near Mobile, Alabama.  The first Baptist church in Alabama was founded in 1808 by the Flint River near Hunstille, Alabama. The first ordained minister was an espicolpalian that was licensed to minister to the British colonists in the Alabama area in 1764.
