Alaska History The first permanent settlement in Alaska was founded on Kodiak Island by the Three Saints Bay by the Russians in 1784.  Alaska, "The Great Land",  was admitted into the union in 1959, it is the fourty ninth state.  The Alaskan state bird is the Willow Pitmigan, its state fish is the King Salmon, and the state flower of Alaska is the Forget Me Not.  The first Christian minister to work in Alaska was the Reverand A.L. Lindsley in 1868.  When Reverand Lidsley was researching his mission trip to Alaska for church service he got most of his information from then Secretary of the State, Seward, "Sewards Folly", who gave him vital information on the native population of Alaska.
